ACLU Supports Transgender Protections
By POLLY NELSON
The ACLU of Oregon strongly supports proposed changes to Eugeneâs anti-discrimination code that would extend equal protection in employment, housing and public accommodation to transgendered persons within the city.
Additional major changes would create a domestic partner registry, allow a private right of action for those who think they have been discriminated against, add ethnicity to the list of qualifiers that would receive protection under the cityâs anti-discrimination code, and formalize the volunteer support committee that helps people report incidents of discrimination or harassment.
The Eugene City Council will hold a public hearing on Oct. 14 on the proposed slate of amendments to Eugeneâs Human Rights code. The council will vote on the final amended proposal on Oct. 28.
