2002 - 2003 Award Criteria

The Oregon ACLU and the Greater Oregon Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists have awarded the 2003 Student Press Freedom Award to Westview High School student Tara Watson.  Tara's editorial on book banning in schools highlights the lack of understanding created by efforts to hide uncomfortable subject matter by banning books.  Tara argues that school is the ideal structured arena for discussion of the real world issues and emotions contained in these books.

Tara says of her editorial, "When I heard about Derry Jackson and his complaints about Huck Finn, I decided that I wanted to research the subject further and put in my two cents on the subject. Because many of the arguments supporting book banning are very personal and emotional, I tried to keep my arguments as objective and logical as possible."

This fall, 17 year old Tara will be a senior at Westview High School, writing and editing for Westview's newspaper,  The Prowl.  Tara will also be part of the school's student government this year.
